The Women of Wellington have started a new Polo League that will offer “more options to female players to compete in organized polo in a location with a strong polo presence. WOW will provide playing opportunities and a platform to promote amateur and professional women’s players to encourage greater participation in the U.S. Open Women’s Polo Championship,” according to a recent article published by the United States Polo Association.
We asked Maureen Brennan, member of the host tournament committee, what makes this opportunity unique for women in polo. “This would be the first full season in Wellington featuring a series of USPA women’s polo events at this higher level.”
Other members of the host tournament committee include Haley Bryan, USPA tournament manager Kaila Dowd, and Kylie Sheehan, who runs the Flying Cow Polo Club in Wellington, FL. “As a female professional developing my career, I have run into a recurrent problem—there is not enough women’s tournament polo being offered in Wellington,” says Sheehan. “The WOW Polo League will be a platform for players to gain experience with three highly organized, competitive tournaments at the medium goal level.”
Sheehan says that the WOW Polo League will “ultimately create a pathway for more players to participate in the USPA US Open Women’s Championship.” By providing an opportunity and a platform for both seasoned and players new to polo, WOW Polo League can bring “an exciting new level of women’s polo not yet enjoyed during the competitive Wellington season.”
